No Sponsors, Smalley Goes Local

NASCAR Development Driver (Lafferty Motorsports), Phillip Smalley, who tested an ARCA car at Hickory Motor Speedway in early spring, is going local. The 19-year-old from Waterford, Michigan, has been unable to secure sponsorship to run Late Models at Hickory Motor Speedway, the ARCA Racing Series, or the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. Therefore, Smalley has decided it is time to get back in the seat the hard way, out of pocket.

Unfortunately, without any marketing partners, Smalley can only financially support, a Pure Stock Race Team, as he works and goes to school full-time and continues to pursue his racing dreams. Smalley says, "Even at this level, racing Pure Stocks (Street Stocks), the money adds up quickly, a typical operation easily can cost as much as 10k dollars up front, with operating cost upwards of 5k dollars per year."

"Honestly, one thing I think we all forget is, racing is still something we ALL do for fun, even those who are fortunate enough to make a living doing it," added Smalley. He still has dreams of racing for a living, and although, things have not gone as planned, he continues to have an upbeat attitude about it all. He said, "Look, I'm still young, 19 is young - they say it's too old in this sport, I don't listen. It is just like anything else in life, you have to work for what you want. I'm going to continue to enjoy it, and always will, whether I make a living doing it or not."

Phillip will be racing in the Pure Stock Division at the Dixie Motor Speedway in Birch Run, Michigan, the Owosso Motor Speedway in Ovid, Michigan, & Auto City Speedway in Clio, Michigan. "Pure Stocks" are older American Cars, built to race, with 350 cubic inch and 400 cubic inch engines, making around 300hp. Also know as Street Stocks, Factory Stocks, or ABC Stocks at other tracks around the country.
