Where is She?

I'm just posting this as a little heads up.  From April 1 -
April 7 there won't be any articles posted
on here.  I'll be in North Carolina looking at colleges, which means no fun NASCAR-related activities for me while there - unless I can convince my parents to go someplace.

If you want to keep in touch with me, you can 'like' my page on Facebook (Facebook.com/AshleySchindler1) or you can follow me on Twitter (nascarchick_3).

I hope all of you who celebrate Easter have a great and safe holiday and for those who don't, I hope you all have a great week!

The Inside Track with Chad Hackenbracht

Chad Hackenbracht is making a name for himself in the ARCA Racing Series.  Hackenbracht, an Ohio-native, started racing in 2003 in Mid Western Quarter Midgets, and raced in that series until 2006 when he moved up to Legend cars, quickly catching the attention of a driver development service.  In 2007, Chad left the Driver Development Service and got a ride with CGH Motorsports.  The 2010 season marked Chad's first full season in the ARCA/ReMax Series.

Chad's revelation of deciding to be a professional race car driver is 'out of whack' compared to other drivers', he says.  "I saw it on TV and said, 'Hey, I want to do that!'  I didn’t have any family already in racing like many others.  My parents sort of shrugged it off for a bit and didn’t really pursue it until I asked again a few months later."

"Everyone, I guess, thought it was off-the-wall at first since no one around me did it; nor was our small town in Ohio any sort of racing town.  Everyone at school thought I was stupid and said there's no way you'll make it into NASCAR, kind of like a 'Good luck, you're crazy' type of thing."

"The hardest part of racing for me is putting myself out there.  I'm pretty reserved and shy, so throwing myself in front of people I don’t know at all is a bit new to me.  For instance, walking up to Rick Hendrick and handing him my card….probably not one of my strong suits," says Chad when asked about the hardest part of racing for him.  "My personality on-track is very similar to my personality off-track.  I am very calm; hardly say a word on the radio, and I never get upset.  I think across all of our bad luck last year, I only got angry maybe twice and I bet I said a total of 100 words on the radio all last year!"

I recently became interested in fans meeting drivers, so I had to ask Chad what his favorite fan encounter had been so far.  "This seems to be a pretty common question that I'm getting more and more, so I'm going to have to come up with something for this.  I really don’t have anything in particular that sticks out.  I guess the time I signed a prosthetic leg in Talladega would have to rank up there as an interesting one, I don’t know about favorite."

"I love to race at Salem and Winchester; they are both high-banking short tracks that I've run very well at in the past.  At the same time, I love to race at the big tracks like Kansas, Chicagoland, and Michigan."

Credit: Chad Hackenbracht
Chad had an interesting answer if all he thinks about is winning, "For me, not really.  I guess it could be since it's been so long since I've been to Victory Lane, but really I just worry about getting in the car and driving to the best of my ability and with the given circumstances.  I have a mental coach that tells me to think about the equation A x B = C;  A being the things that I can control, my mindset, etc; B are the things out of my control, like blown tires, other people wrecking, etc; and C are the results.  So don't worry about the B factors, just do your best with what you can control."

Different drivers define "successful driver" in many ways:  fan-friendly, a lot of talent, sponsor-friendly, etc.  "In today's environment, what makes a successful driver is not so much talent; it becomes more talent-based when you make it to Cup, I believe.  But starting out trying to get into NASCAR is all about money.  A successful driver is someone that can sell themselves to a sponsor and talk themselves up.  It's also what you can bring to the table for a sponsor, so I think that a successful driver coming up is measured by how personable they are."  I think many of us can agree with this 100%.

Speaking of sponsors and sponsorship, Chad and his No. 58 team may not have the funding to go to the next ARCA race at Salem on April 29th, so they can use any help they can get.  "I hope we've got someone on the car for some amount of money, but it's tough in this economy.  Really, I suppose there's not much the fans can do besides tell anyone they know that they need to support their driver!"  You heard him, people; tell everyone you know so we can try to get him sponsorship to run at Salem in April and for the rest of the season!
Credit: Chad Hackenbracht
This past ARCA race at Mobile International Speedway, Chad finished second behind Eddie Sharp Racing's Cale Gale, after starting eighth.  This was Hackenbracht's career-best finish in thirty ARCA races.  This propelled him into third place in the Championship standings, ten points behind second place and twenty-five points behind first place.

If you're interested in contacting Chad:

Throughout this entire you've been wondering how to correctly pronounce 'Hackenbracht,' right?  No worries, it's pronounced 'Hock - en - bra.'  All of your problems have now been alleviated!

Check back next week to see pictures from my tour at Chad's shop in North Carolina!

Lug Nuts of Information

Camping World Truck Series
  • This week is a big week for Red Horse Racing who had trucks finishing in the first, second, and sixth-place in the Series' first race at Daytona.
    • Daytona race winner and current points leader, John King, will race in his second Martinsville race this Saturday.  His first race was behind the wheel of an SS Green Light Racing car.
  • There will be four new faces in this weekend's race.
    • Jeb Burton, the nineteen-year-old son of Ward Burton from Halifax, Virginia, will make his Camping World Truck Series debut at Martinsville.
    • Brennan Newberry, a native from California, has competed in nine K&N Pro Series West races during his career; his best finish of fifth coming at Las Vegas Motor Speedway's Bullring last year.
    • Natalie Sather, from North Carolina, is a graduate from the Drive for Diversity program.  She finished second in the NASCAR Whelen late model points at South Boston Speedway.
    • Caleb Holman, from Abingdon, Virginia, has competed in five Nationwide Series races from 2003 and 2007 and will now make his debut in the Camping World Truck Series.
  • Timothy Peters, the Daytona runner-up, has a good chance of winning this weekend.
    • Martinsville is his home track and, coincidentally, his first Camping World Truck Series win came at this track in 2009.
  • David Reutimann, besides Kevin Harvick, is the only other Sprint Cup Series points-eligible driver in Saturday's Camping World Truck Series Race.

Sprint Cup Series
  • Martinsville is one of Denny Hamlin's home tracks.  Since winning at Phoenix and sitting on the pole at Auto Club Speedway, Hamlin will be one to watch this weekend.
  • Dale Earnhardt, Jr. is another one to keep an eye out for this weekend.  Martinsville is his best track, having a Driver Rating of 99.0, one of the highest at this track.  Last spring, he finished in the runner-up position, but before that, he had three consecutive top-ten finishes at Martinsville.
  • Finally, Kevin Harvick is always a factor when he comes to Martinsville.  He has three consecutive top-five finishes and has not finished worse than twelfth in eight of the last nine races.

2012 All-Star Race Format Changes

New NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race Format Places Premium
On Winning Segments Prior To 10-Lap Shootout
Pit Road Strategy To Be Critical Component;
Fans To Again Vote One Driver Into Field

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (March 27, 2012) – The 28th running of the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race will provide some additional incentive for drivers to win one of the four segments heading into the final 10-lap shootout, as the emphasis on winning and pit road strategy have never been more prevalent in this special night of NASCAR star-studded competition. Through the annual Sprint Fan Vote, under way now, fans can again cast ballots for their favorite eligible driver. The driver receiving the highest number of votes will earn a spot in the field.
Credit: Charlotte Motor Speedway

The NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race set for Saturday, May 19 at Charlotte Motor Speedway (SPEED, 7 p.m.), will consist of four 20-lap segments, concluding with a 10-lap sprint and a $1 million payout to the race winner. This year’s format will place a higher premium for drivers who win one of the four segments, however, as the winners of the first four segments will move to the front of the field and line up 1-4 prior to the field coming to pit road for the final mandatory pit stop.

When the drivers come down pit road, crew chiefs will have to decide on their best pit strategy, as multiple scenarios will unfold. The team that makes the best call, combined with the optimum performance on pit road, is likely to be in the driver’s seat for the final 10 laps of competition. Wherever the drivers are positioned as they come off pit road after that pit stop is where they will line up to start the final 10-lap segment.

“This new addition to the format is going to provide even greater incentive for the drivers to go all out to win one of the four segments,” said Robin Pemberton, NASCAR vice president of competition. “It also puts even more focus on the pit crews and how they perform during that final pit stop. The team aspect of the sport will be highlighted more than ever and it helps set the stage for an exciting race and an exciting evening for the fans.”

The eligibility standards for the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race remain the same: race winners from either the 2011 or 2012 season through May 12 or any past champions of the all-star event or NASCAR Sprint Cup Series over the previous 10 years are eligible for the race. In addition, the top-two finishers in the Sprint Showdown, a 40-lap preliminary race scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and the winner of the Sprint Fan Vote, all advance into the all-star race lineup.

Fans can vote by using the NASCAR Sprint Cup Mobile Android™ application on their Sprint phone, or by texting “VOTE” to 229466 on any wireless carrier (standard text messaging and data rates apply). Voting is also open at NASCAR.com/AllStar or by visiting the Sprint Experience, located in the midway at all NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races. Voting will continue until 5 p.m. EDT on Saturday, May 19. As an added customer benefit, votes submitted from a Sprint, Boost, Nextel or Virgin Mobile device count double toward an individual driver’s total.

Individual tickets for the May 19 NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race and Blake Shelton pre-race concert presented by Target are on sale now starting at just $39. Fans can also purchase an All-Star Four-Pack for just $99. Tickets can be obtained online at www.charlottemotorspeedway.com or by calling Charlotte Motor Speedway at 1-800-455-FANS.

The eighth annual NASCAR Sprint Pit Crew Challenge returns to kick off the all-star week’s competition, Thursday, May 17 at 7 p.m. at the Time Warner Cable Arena. The event’s finishing order determines pit selection for the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race. The No. 11 FedEx Toyota team is the defending Pit Crew Challenge champion. Tickets for the NASCAR Sprint Pit Crew Challenge start at $15 and can be purchased online at www.pitcrewchallenge.com or by calling the Charlotte Bobcats ticket office at 800-745-3000.

Social Media Invades NASCAR

As Brad Keselowski climbed out of his No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge in Victory Lane at Bristol Motor Speedway, he paused for a moment to take a picture of the reporters there alongside him.  Honestly, this didn’t come as a surprise to many NASCAR fans that are on Twitter.

Social media is quickly becoming more present in the NASCAR world.  If you take a poll of how many NASCAR fans use a social media website during the week to keep up with racing news and to talk to other fans, and how many fans use social media during the race to see behind-the-scenes pictures and information, a clear majority would say that they do.  I can guarantee you that almost 40% of NASCAR fans are on these social media websites, whether it's Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Google Plus, etc.

Credit: Google Images

It seems that this year the social media has blown up - and many people took notice at Daytona when Brad Keselowski was tweeting during the Red Flag that ensued when Juan Pablo Montoya hit the jet dryer and it exploded, which set the track on fire.  Tweeting from the car, Brad was able to engage NASCAR fans in the Red Flag and talk to them, answering questions and tweeting pictures of the track and his fellow drivers standing outside their cars.  These few tweets helped him gain over 100,000+ followers on the popular 140-character social media website.

Twitter and Facebook are two of the biggest media outlets in the NASCAR world; you can find a good majority of the drivers, teams, and tracks on these two websites.  One of the major advantages of following your favorite driver on Facebook and Twitter is that you can see what they're doing while they're not at the track.  This allows you to get a better idea of what they're like while they're away from the track and what they do during their days at home.  Many people are surprised to find out that they are, indeed, regular people who go shopping at Target, food shopping at Food Lion, and do things around the house (besides annoying their wives or girlfriends)!  Another advantage is a large percentage of the drivers, teams, and tracks do trivia giveaways for tickets, pit passes, shirts, hats, autographs, etc., the list goes on and on.  It's also a great way to talk to your favorite drivers and ask them questions that you want answered, making you feel like you are a part of the drivers' lives - therefore making them more accessible.

Unfortunately, with every advantage, there is a disadvantage.  A majority of the drivers are very careful about what they do and don't post because they (a) don’t want to make their fans mad (b) don’t want to make their sponsors mad and (c) don’t want to cause a riot among their followers.  This is why drivers such as Carl Edwards and Dale Earnhardt, Jr., don’t have Twitter accounts out of fear that they will post something that isn't agreeable among their fans and sponsors.  If you think about it, it does make sense; by not having a Twitter, they can avoid all of the problems the other drivers who are very active on these websites worry about.

If you have to judge social media on a whole - including the advantages and disadvantages - many people will say that it does help NASCAR grow as a sport, mainly because it is becoming more fan-friendly and interactive.  Thinking about it, 99.8% of you reading this article right now have found it through either Facebook or Twitter.

Social media has helped shape our sport today - whether you feel it is positive or negative.

Would the Real Danica Please Stand Up?

At Sunday's Honda Grand Prix at Saint Petersburg, the first IndyCar race of the season, James Hinchcliffe put on a wig to look like Danica Patrick.  Since he is now sporting the lime green Go Daddy fire suit because Danica moved to NASCAR, he thought it would be funny to pretend to be her during driver introductions.  So I have one question, will the real Danica please stand up?

Penalties Upheld for the No. 48 Team

Credit: NASCAR
After the penalties were handed to Jimmie Johnson and his team for the violation of the rules at Daytona (to see the complete story click here) last month, it was announced by Rick Hendrick that they planned on appealing those penalties.

Today, March 13, 2012, that appeal was heard.  After reviewing the facts and penalties, the National Stock Car Racing Appeals Panel deliberated and came up with the unanimous decision to keep the penalties the way they were assigned by NASCAR.

The penalties will remain as following:
  • Jeff Gordon (Car Owner) will lose twenty-five Car Owner points.
  • Jimmie Johnson (Driver) will lose twenty-five Championship Driver points.
  • Chad Knaus (Crew Chief) will have to pay a $100,000 fine, is suspended for the next six Sprint Cup Series races, and will be on probation until May 9, 2012.
  • Ron Malec (Car Chief) will be suspended for the next six Sprint Cup Series races and will also be on probation until May 9, 2012.
The case won’t end there.  After they heard the verdict, Hendrick decided that taking the case to the next level would be necessary; “We feel strongly about this issue and will continue to pursue it at the next level.”  Since they will be continuing in the appeal process, Chad Knaus will be on the pit box until a final verdict is reached - whenever that may be since the date has not been decided yet.
Time will only tell how these penalties will affect the No. 48’s 2012 Championship hopes.

Hackenbracht Hopeful for Entry at Salem

For Immediate Release:
Tuesday, March 13, 2012
Hackenbracht Hopeful for Entry at Salem;
More News & Notes from Mobile International Speedway
(TOLEDO, Ohio) - Chad Hackenbracht correctly predicted after stepping out of his car following the Mobile ARCA 200 that he'd be among the new point leaders in the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards. Now, the most recent runner-up in the series hopes he can continue to compete.
Credit: ARCA Racing
Hackenbracht, driving for family-owned CGH Motorsports, finished second to Eddie Sharp Racing's Cale Gale on the Alabama half-mile Saturday, and now stands third in series driver points behind Gale and Venturini Motorsports' Brennan Poole.
"It's a career best and we finally got a finish that we really deserved," said Hackenbracht, whose car is the No. 58 Chevrolet. "Nothing bad happened, and I thought I had a run on (Gale). We had a run going into (Turn) 1 on that final lap. He got all squirrelly and I tried to go to the inside and I was down in the grass, so it didn't stick. I tried to maybe move up in the last corner, but he did a great job. I can't thank these guys enough. We may come out of here as the points leader or second in points, as far as who's going to the next race."
However, Hackenbracht is not certain that his team will have the funding to make the season's third event. Salem Speedway is the next stop on Sunday, April 29, meaning he has six weeks to find support.
"We don't know what races we're going to, but anyone at Salem that wants to be there, we've run in the top five there every time we've been there and we want to go there," he said. "If anyone wants to jump on board for this year, we're here."
"Dream" Coming True for Sharp: Eddie Sharp has seen his share of success in the ARCA Racing Series, and this year owns three teams in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. Things are coming together nicely at his operation, he says, and Saturday's Mobile win by Cale Gale was another step in the right direction.
Sharp spoke soon after the race about his appreciation for ARCA and excitement in Gale's win.
"I've been around this series a long time and I get more and more satisfaction out of watching these young kids get to do their thing," he said. "I'm just a small part of it, to give them a platform. I love this series, and being that this is Cale's home track and what Rheem has done for my company, this is just the year you dream of having. It's a great way to get us on track."
Top Rookie Bowman Regrets Contact: Alex Bowman's No. 22 Dodge led 43 of the first 65 laps in the Mobile ARCA 200 after starting first, but late contact with Frank Kimmel (No. 44 Ansell/Menards Toyota) damaged his front end and hurt his chances of winning ARCA's first trip to the track. Bowman finished the day third.
"It was tough, definitely," Bowman said. "The St. Jude's/eBay Motors Dodge was pretty good all day. We were really good on new tires. I just can't thank everybody at Cunningham Motorsports enough. We had good pit stops all day and (crew chief) Paul Andrews had good calls from up on the pit box. I think I cost us the race that little bit I got into Kimmel. I'm not quite sure what happened there, but from that point on, it just got real tight. It's a solid run and a whole lot better than Daytona, so we'll take it and move on to Salem."
Kimmel provided his comments in a press release soon after the race, expressing disappointment but ultimately chalking the contact up to natural short track racing.
"This is just a shame," he said. "We had such a great car here today in Mobile. Not only did all the guys work hard to get a new chassis ready, we just had the right horsepower and setup package. I was ready to make a move and felt like we had a win here, and it's a shame to take a spin. It happens; it's a big part of short track racing, but the positive is they saw what we had today. Everyone hopefully understands that we mean business this year, and we'll just keep tackling these tracks one at a time. I'm looking forward to getting to my home track of Salem next (to) see some hometown fans."
Bowman mentioned Kimmel, or several Kimmels, as drivers to beat at the next stop on the ARCA tour.
"Our Salem car is pretty much all the way ready," he said. "We're going to test. The Kimmels are always fast up there, so we've got to go up there and compete with them."
Bowman is currently the leader in the Team Messina Rookie Challenge by 10 points over Buster Graham.
King Earns CGS Hard Charger Award: Clint King was quick to credit his crew chief and spotter in earning the CGS Imaging Hard Charger of the Race Award at Mobile International Speedway.
King started 20th and finished fifth. His 15-position improvement just topped Sean Corr, who improved 13 positions inside the race.
"It was overall a really solid day, and I'm really proud of the 66 team, (crew chief) Teddy Brown, (spotter) Branden Lines, and Venturini Motorsports," King said. "This was a brand new race car last week when we came down here and tested, and we really worked on it."
King said that a long green flag run near the end of the race may have helped him win. In the end, he's not regretful, but instead happy to escape clean for the next race on the schedule.
"Considering we came home with the car in one piece, we can get it ready for the next one we go to, which is Salem. We'll take what we get and we'll move on there."
The 16-year-old - who won a pole on his birthday and first day of ARCA eligibility last season - plans to enter at Salem on April 29 and Toledo on May 20, but hopes to end the season with eight or 10 races under his belt.
"A good run always helps sponsorship, and I hope we can find some sponsorship to run as many of these races as we can," he said.
First Top-10 Since '10 for Kile: Mikey Kile took the 2011 season off from the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards to pursue a small opportunity in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, but has returned to ARCA this year with Andy Belmont Racing.
Saturday, he earned his first top-five since finishing fourth for Venturini Motorsports at Kansas Speedway in September 2010. Kile drove Belmont's No. 1 ModSpace Ford to fourth at Mobile, a result he might not have expected.
"To be honest with you, I didn't know how it was going to go," Kile said. "We didn't qualify very well, but as the car got laps it just came alive and we started clicking cars off. There for a bit, we were a half-second faster than the field. I really would have liked it to go green all the way to the end, but it didn't, but we went from 15th to fourth, which is a good points day. We got another car we've built that's better than this one, so I'm looking forward to bringing it to Salem. I'm really proud of everyone on the ModSpace team and looking forward to going to the next one.

Some Exciting News!

Myself at the SPEED Studios in August 2010....
maybe I'll be working there one day
I am happy to announce that a major thing happened for me today - the article that I wrote for College Complete, the company I intern at and Camping World Truck Series driver Justin Lofton's sponsor, has been published on SPEED TV's website, www.Speedtv.com!  You can find the link to my article by clicking here!

As you can tell by my excessive use of exclamation points that I am extremely excited, and hope that this isn't the last time my work will be featured on SPEED's website.  Hopefully, one day, I won't be writing articles for SPEED's website, but will be writing down what I'll be saying on air on SPEED!

Thank you all for your continued support!

Penalties Given to the No. 48 Team

Credit: NASCAR

On opening day of the 2012 Sprint Cup Series season, February 17, NASCAR found illegal parts on Jimmie Johnson's car.  The illegal parts, the C-posts, were in violation of Sections 12-1, 12-4J, and 20-2.1E.  In English, that means that the part was not in conformity with NASCAR's rules, and it was considered an unapproved car body modification.

NASCAR didn't let this slide and docked Jimmie Johnson twenty-five driver's points (leaving him in last place in the points), car owner, Jeff Gordon, was docked twenty-five owner points, Chad Knaus, crew chief of the No. 48, has been suspended for the next six races and fined $100,000, and finally, Ron Malec, car chief, has also been suspended for the next six races.  Knaus and Malec will also be put on NASCAR probation until May 9, 2012.

It seems that NASCAR won't hesitate to give out penalties this year - was this penalty strict because NASCAR wanted to set an example for any teams that were thinking of cheating this year?  Chances are, we'll never know, so we can only wonder.

Penske Goes Back to Ford in 2013

On Thursday, March 1, it was announced that Penske Racing is going back to Ford starting in 2013.  This will be the first time that Ford and Penske work together since 2002, after Ford was the manufacturer for Penske from 1994 to 2002.

As many of you know, Penske Racing was the only team to still have Dodge as a manufacturer, but after this season, Dodge will probably not be back in the Sprint Cup Series next year unless another team switches manufacturers.  This announcement comes just a few weeks before Dodge was going to unveil the 2013 Dodge Charger race car design at Las Vegas.  Penske's ten-year contract with Dodge will expire after the 2012 season.

Roger Penske's decision to go back to Ford was one he felt needed to be done.  After winning sixty-eight races in the Sprint Cup Series since 1972 and never being able to win a Sprint Cup Series Championship, Penske believes that this move to Ford will be his best chance at winning a Championship in NASCAR's top series.  Next year, Penske will have two Sprint Cup Series teams and two Nationwide Series teams.

Penske is very happy about this move and says that his decision was not based on money.  "Let me say this, this wasn't about money, and I want to make that clear," Penske said. "I think that we evaluated, when you look at the strengths of the teams in NASCAR, the multiple-car teams, the success that Stewart-Haas had, the alignment with Hendrick, also with Gibbs and Waltrip and the teams that were out there ... we've been operating pretty much for the last 10 years with some support ... but we needed to have a benchmark. And I think having that additional technical information flow through the process, as Ford has outlined it to us, I think was very important to us."
