Gil Martin Returning to the No. 29 Brigade

After a very lackluster year for Kevin Harvick and the No. 29 team, it was announced a few minutes ago that Gil Martin, who stepped down as Kevin Harvick's crew chief before the 2012 season began, will, in fact, be Harvick's crew chief for the rest of the season.

It's safe to say that Harvick isn't having the year he had hoped for.  Currently sitting eighth in points, he's eighty-five points behind Championship Points leader, Greg Biffle.  With zero poles and wins, he's relying on his three top-five and nine top-ten finishes to help lead him to the Championship.

Do I think the change was made too late?  I said two weeks ago that Martin would be back as the leader of the No. 29 brigade.  However, it's never too late, that is, unless it's Homestead and you're twelfth in points.  But for Harvick, he is known as "The Closer," so anything is possible.  With three races left until the 2012 Chase, Harvick has a good chance of winning at least one of them; after all, Kevin Harvick, Gil Martin, and the entire No. 29 team have worked together for almost three years.

Only time will tell if Harvick will keep his spot in the Chase and move up in the point standings.
